Corona Curls Are Catching On!

One of the surprising consequences of the pandemic, is that curly and wavy girls are discovering their curls and embracing them. Now that they are no longer leaving their house to go to the office, many curly girls are finally embracing the hair they were born with. Imagine that! Corona curls are catching on! I am grateful for this because I love curly hair.

If you are still blowing your curly or wavy hair out straight, I encourage you to put down the blow fryer and back away. Why waste time making your hair look less attractive? It’s absurd! Maybe you are still brainwashed by hairstylists who don’t understand how to cut and style curly hair. These stylists mean well, of course, but their ignorance isn’t helping you. Since they don’t know more than what they were taught by their Cosmetology school teacher, they continue the same old routine of cutting curly hair wet and blowing it out with a round brush, or worse, flat ironing it. I believe that poorly trained hairstylists are the main reason that so many curly girls think they have to straighten their hair.

After having done the hair of over 5,000 curly haired women, I can assure you that no two heads of curly hair are alike. Your curl pattern is absolutely 100% unique to you. This is one of the amazing things about curly hair that I find so exciting.

I often listen to my curly clients tell me which of their curls they like and which of their curls they dislike and wish were different. I find this amusing because I think that all curls are great. Most people with 2A, 2B, 2C, 3A and 3B curls seem to prefer their tightest curls and dislike their loosest ones. Most people with 3C, 4A, 4B and 4C curls prefer their loosest curls and dislike their tightest ones. I believe that if you could form a circle of 100 curly girls and ask them whose hair they wanted, they would all point to someone and say “I want her hair!”

Our mission at Devana Salon is to inspire and EMBRACE natural hair, beauty and spirit. Wouldn’t it be great if we all accepted our own God-given hair? I, for one, am glad that I still have the few hairs that I have left on my head. When a client tells me that she wishes her curls were different, I try to reassure her that she is lucky to have the exact curl pattern that she has. Wishing that her curl pattern was different is like wishing that she had a different fingerprint.

“Be grateful that you have curly hair,” I usually tell them. “It could be straight, after all, and then you would really have something to complain about.”

To me, all curly hair is beautiful. The fact that over 65% of the human population has curly hair shows that curly hair is a dominant gene. The reason there are so many curly haired people is because those with curly hair are having more babies. Do you know why this is? It is because other people find them attractive and want to have sex with them.

What Your Curly Hair Style Says About You

Now that hair salons have been allowed to reopen in Colorado, I am impressed more than ever by the importance of having a good hairstylist, one that understands you and the look that you want to present to the rest of society. Many of my curly haired clients have told me that one of their most pressing goals, after the Covid-19 stay-at-home order was lifted, was to get a haircut. This made me wonder why our hair is so important.
It is obvious that our relationship with our hair is extremely intimate and complex. As anyone who’s gotten a really good, or bad, haircut knows, hair is so much more than just a look. It can be a reflection and reinforcement of who you are. Your hairstyle is intensely personal and, at the same time, totally public. Sometimes your hair speaks for you, even before you say a thing. It becomes a statement of who you are, and a sign of your identity.
This is why we spend so much time perfecting how our hair should look. We constantly search for the most suitable haircut, color, and texture. We are using our hair to speak, and trying, through our hairstyle, to express key aspects of our soul and to communicate some of the deepest truths about who we are.
Hair has played an important role in people’s confidence and self-image for as long as their have been hair growing people on Earth. As long ago as the Greek and Roman empires, detailed wigs were symbols of wealth and stature in society. Cleopatra, Queen of the Nile, was famous for her thick, black hair. Why Naturally Curly Hair Is So Attractive

According to DevaCurl, over 65% of the population has curly or wavy hair. The attractiveness of curly hair is proven by this statistic alone. Curly haired people have been attracting mates every since the first curly hair spring out of the first round head countless generations ago. Ever since then, curly haired people have been making babies at a record pace. It’s a wonder that there are any straight haired people in existence at all.

The question then becomes: Why is curly hair so attractive? In my opinion, curly hair is attractive because it is spontaneous and unpredictable. There is something beautiful about it’s independence. Your curls will not conform to societal pressure and they will not acquiesce to any attempts to tame them. Sure, you can temporarily straighten your curls with a flat iron and you can straighten your waves with a blow dryer and brush, but the next time you get your hair wet it will spring back curly again. Naturally curly hair defies every attempt to change it. If you are really desperate, you can go so for as to straighten your curls with a chemical relaxer, but even that won’t stop the curls from growing out of your scalp and making a mockery of your attempts to tame it. 

Curly hair is playful and fun. It can’t be easily controlled and it is different every day. This is part of it’s appeal. Conformity is boring and curly hair is definitely not boring. Curly and wavy hair is completely uninhibited by societal pressure. Your curls will laugh in your face when you try to change them and they will declare themselves a wild force of nature. This is hot! And that is why so many people want to make babies with people with curly hair.

How To Get Your Curly Mojo Back

Is there anyone more adorable than a curly haired toddler? The little one has his or her curly mojo going in full force. Can you imagine straightening a child’s curly hair? Of course not! I have seen mothers protect their child’s curls like their lives depend upon it. Why is it that curls on young children are adored, but when the child grows older something makes them want to straighten their hair? At about the age of ten, the curly mojo seems to be replaced by a strange societal pressure to straighten the curls. To me, this is not only sad, but ridiculous. 

If you have curly hair, count yourself as lucky. Look around these days and you will see that more curly haired people are embracing their natural texture. Isn’t it time for you to join your curly tribe?

Here is How To Get Your Curly Mojo Back:

  1. Accept that you have curly hair. Every time you get out of the shower your hair is telling you something…it is naturally curly for God’s sake! This is who you are. Embrace your true nature. You are blessed!
  2. Embrace the spontaneity of curly hair. Every day your hair will be a little different. Rather than see this as a bad thing, why not be grateful for it? Spontaneity is one of the things that makes nature so beautiful. Inside of you is a Wild Woman or Wild Man wanting to express itself. This is good. Let a little wildness come out! We will all be grateful to you.
  3. Put away your brush and hot tools and stop fight against your curls. Throw away your flat iron and curling iron. All you need to detangle your hair is some good conditioner and your fingers or a wide tooth comb. Always detangle your curls using conditioner when you are in the shower and then let your hair be curly.s
  4. Throw away any shampoos that contain sulfates. Sodium laurel sulfate, in particular, is a harsh chemical detergent that will strip all the good oils out of your hair and leave your curls dry and frizzy.
  5. Stop using products which contain silicones and parabens. These ingredients may at first appear to make your hair smooth and shiny but they can build up on your hair and prevent moisture from getting into the cortex (inner layer) of your hair where it is needed.
  6. Look around you and admire all the gorgeous curly hair you see. According to DevaCurl, over 65% of the population has naturally curly or wavy hair. Do you know why two-thirds of the human population has curly hair?… It is because other people want to have sex with curly haired people and curly babies are being born! Forget what you hear about men preferring straight haired women. This simply isn’t true. Men love women who show off their natural curls and women usually feel the same way about curly haired men. Show off your curls and make some curly haired babies!
  7. Moisturize, deep condition, and drink plenty of water. The cuticle (scaly outer layer) of curly hair is raised more than the cuticle on straight hair. This allows moisture to escape from curly hair more easily. As a result, curly hair can become dry and requires continuous moisturizing. I like a deep conditioning treatment called Melt into Moisture by DevaCurl and I suggest that my clients use it twice a month or more.
  8. Accept the fact that you might have a little frizz. It’s ok! In her book, Curly Girl, Lorraine Massey calls this a frizz halo. I love this spiritual way of looking at it. Curly hair is a gift to you from God, or whatever you want to call your Creator, and if your Creator loves your curls, shouldn’t you? 
  9. Protect your curls when you sleep by putting your hair up in a ponytail on the top of your head and sleeping on a silk or satin pillowcase or wearing a silk or satin bonnet. When you get out of bed in the morning, let your hair down, spritz with a refreshing mist, reshape your curls with your fingers, and with a little luck, you are good to go.
  10. Make (or buy) a few bottles of lavender water and spritz your hair throughout the day to hydrate your curls and control fly aways.
  11. Ask your hairstylist to learn to cut your hair dry in it’s naturally curly state and style it naturally curly when they are done. If your hairstylist doesn’t want to quit blowing your curly hair out straight and insists on cutting it wet, then it may be time to find a new stylist who embraces your natural hair texture. 
  12. Embrace the uniqueness of your curly hair. Your curly hair pattern is like no one else’s. It is as unique as your fingerprint. Don’t suppress your uniqueness, show it off! Be grateful that you have curly hair. You are lucky.
  13. Imagine that you are two again and spin around on the front lawn until you fall down. Let your curly hair fly baby! You are beautiful!

How To Eliminate “The Shelf” In Your Curly Hair

I had a client the other day who came to me for the first time. She was a beautiful woman in her mid-20s, and when she sat down in my chair I admired her curly hair. All curly girls have a unique curl pattern and like most curly girls, she had different curl types throughout her head. She had loose (2B) curls at the nape of her neck, medium size (2C) curls at the crown of her head, and tighter (3A) curls framing her face. I love this variance in curl texture and told her that I thought her hair was beautiful. Too me, the variance in curl pattern is what makes curly hair so attractive. Your curl pattern is as unique as your fingerprint, and no one else has your exact curl pattern.  

“I hate the curls around my face,” was the first thing she said. I examined the way her hair had been cut before and I could see why she was frustrated. The tighter curls around her face sprung up higher than the looser curls below them and created a “shelf”. All curly girls hate “the shelf” which looks like an upside down letter “L” on the side of their head. 

“It seems like I always have these shelves on the side of my head,” she said in exasperation. “Can you please get rid of them?” she pleaded. 

I explained to her why her hair formed a shelf. It is common mistake that hairstylists make who don’t understand how to cut curly hair that has differing curl patterns throughout the head. 

There are three primary reasons why a shelf is created in curly hair. The first and most common mistake that hairstylists make that creates a shelf, is cutting curly hair when it is wet. The problem with cutting curly hair when it is wet is that there is no way for the hairstylists to see how high the different curls will spring up when they are dry. And the problem is made even worse if some curls are tighter than others, because the tight curls will spring up higher than the looser curls. If the curls that frame the face are tighter than the curls below them, this is a guaranteed way to create a shelf. 

The second way that a shelf is created is when all the hair is directed straight up and the hair is cut square to the top of the head. Unless you are Sasquatch and you have long hair growing on your ears and on your cheeks, then cutting your hair this way will always result in a shelf on the sides of your head. To avoid this, the hair that frames your face must be left out and cut separately from the hair that is directed upward.

I will discuss the third mistake later. So back to my client with her unwanted hair shelf problem. To eliminate her shelves, I first framed her face by taking diagonal sections from her part to her ear, directing her curls slightly forward and down and cutting with zero tension. Then I moved to the back of her head to cut her looser 2B curls. I took horizontal partings from her nape and worked my way up the back of her head always cutting with zero tension until I was satisfied with the density of the perimeter of her hair. Then I began elevating her hair and continued cutting her slightly tighter 2c curls, again using no tension. I proceeded in this way up to the top of her head being careful to leave out the curls that I had already cut around her face. 

After shampooing, conditioning and styling her hair curly, I asked her to stand up so I could do some finishing touches on her haircut. Forgetting to do this part of the haircut is the third reason that a shelf is not spotted and eliminated. I asked her to stand up, and then flip her head forward allowing her hair to hang down. I looked at her hair from this angle and cut any extraneous curls that I may have missed in the earlier part of the haircut. Then I asked her to tilt her head to each side so I could make sure that her curls fall nicely along the side of her face and the tighter curls blend in nicely with the looser ones. If there is a shelf there, then this is a sure way to spot it. 

I then asked her to sit back down in the chair, applied some Natulique Organic Ultra Shine Spray and handed her a mirror so that she could look at her new haircut.

“I love it! The shelf is gone!” she exclaimed happily.

Mission accomplished.

New Year’s Resolutions for Your Curls

New year, new you, right? Well, if you’ve struggled with getting your curls to cooperate, are tired of fighting frizz, or if you’ve spent years straightening your curls away, it can be! Just like any other New Year’s Resolution, transitioning into a new lifestyle has some challenges. But, if you’re looking to finally embrace your naturally curly or wavy hair, then these tips are for you!

How to Embrace Your Naturally Curly Hair in 2018

1. Get to know your curl type

The first step to successfully accomplishing any goal is to know what you’re up against. The same is true for your curly hair, and there is more than one type of curly. Naturally Curly has a great curl quiz that can help you determine your curl type. Keep in mind, if you’ve been straightening out your curls for a while, they may need time to bounce back, so your curl type could change.

2. Become a stalker

If you’ve ever snooped on a friend (read: ex) on social media, you’re a step ahead (go you!). For real, though, you’re going to want to start collecting some info in order to take action. So, start with some recon on your curls. Take notice of how your curls behave. Do they frizz out after only half a day? Does your scalp get oily with certain products? This will help you determine what your curls need.

3. Stop washing your hair

No, you don’t need to stop washing your hair forever. But, you really only need to wash your hair when it’s actually dirty or you’re experiencing build-up. Depending on your curl type, lifestyle and which products you use, that could be anywhere from 2-3 days to 2-3 weeks! The curlier it is, the less you’ll need to wash Experiment with your schedule and don’t wash your until it gets dirty – see how long you can go!

4. Cut out the suds

You’ll probably notice that curly hair shampoo isn’t really shampoo in the traditional sense. That’s because the chemicals that create those suds also happen to strip out your natural oils. Curly and wavy hair is typically drier than straighter hair, so you definitely need to protect the moisture that you do have! Try looking for a no-poo shampoo or try out co-washing, where you skip the shampoo altogether and just ‘wash’ with conditioner. Fair warning, your hair will be greasier at first until your curls stop over-producing those oils your old shampoo has been stripping out.

5. Reward good behavior

Now that you know your curl type and what your curls want from you, you can reward those curls for their good behavior. And what do curls love? Moisture! Look at product lines specifically designed for curly and wavy hair (like DevaCurl and Ouidad). These will be packed with moisture and help your curls find their natural balance. Curly product lines are usually developed cohesively, so you’ll see better results by remaining brand loyal. That said, find the products that work for you and your hair, and you’ll never have to look back.

6. Invest in 1 amazing tool

Learning how to use temperature to harvest your curls will serve you well, especially when setting your curls. Ideally, you should always dry your curls under a cool dryer for an hour (or more), but nobody’s got time for that. Instead, invest in the one tool that will make your curls look ah-maz-ing in 20 mins or less. A diffuser or diffuser attachment on your hairdryer is a miracle worker. You never want to blow hot air at your curls, which is why you don’t want to use the standard hairdryer’s mouthpiece: that just causes frizz.

7. Learn the hacks

Pineapple, Plopping, Satin Sleeping: what do these things have in common? They’re all curly hair hacks that can seriously improve your curls. How you wash, dry, comb, and sleep on your hair definitely impact your curls. That means it’s time to get your study on! Swap your towel for a t-shirt. Sleep on a satin pillow. Pile your hair on top of your head like a pineapple before you go to bed. Don’t brush your curls, finger through them with a wide-toothed comb. And there are so many more!

8. Find a stylist who knows curly hair

We’ve all had bad haircuts, but curlies have had more than their fair share. This is simply because cutting curly hair is completely different from cutting straight hair. For starters, you often cut curly hair dry. Find a stylist who’s received curly hair training, or better yet, specializes in curly hair. These stylists will not only know how to cut your hair based on your curl pattern in style that frames your face, but they’ll also be able to give you tips on curl care and product lines.

9 Things That Will Always Disrupt Your Wavy Curl Pattern

Women with wavy hair have to treat their hair differently than those with tighter curls. If you have wavy hair, you probably want better curl definition. If this is you, you need to avoid the following nine things that will always disrupt your wavy curl pattern.

1. Touching your hair while it’s still drying

This is especially challenging if you like to air dry your hair. But touching your hair while it is drying will break up your curls and cause more frizz. I know it’s hard, but try keeping your hands off your hair until it is completely dry. When it is dry, scrunch your hair lightly to soften the product in your hair. If you want more volume, flip your head over and loosen the roots with your fingers. Then flip your head upright, spray with a little flexible hold hairspray if you want to, and then try not to touch your hair anymore. The more you touch it, the more you will disrupt the curl pattern.

2. Using products that are too heavy

Some finer-haired wavies, may find that heavier products weigh their hair down. Using these products can cause your hair to be less bouncy and defined, and leave your hair looking stringy and limp. If you think this may happen to you, lightweight products may be more ideal. I like using DevaCurl Wave Maker on girls with fine wavy hair, and I only apply a nickel-sized amount.

3. Using too much product and being heavy-handed

Even if a product is lightweight and marketed to your hair type, more is not necessarily better. It takes some experimentation to find the perfect amount, but using too much of any product can make hair look weighed down and undefined.

4. Brushing your hair

Obviously, brushing your curls will disrupt the curl pattern. I instruct my clients to use their fingers or a wide tooth comb to detangle, preferably while they have conditioner in their hair.

5. Certain ingredients

Hair reacts differently to different ingredients in hair care products. Many wavy girls find that their hair reacts negatively to products that contain sulfates and non-water soluble silicones. Sulfates strip away all the good oils in your hair and tend to cause dehydration that leads to frizz. Silicones can build up on your hair and weigh it down, as well as act as a barrier against water entering and leaving the hair strand.

6. Terrycloth towels

Using a microfiber towel or a cotton t-shirt to dry your hair is significantly better than using a terrycloth towel. Terrycloth towels have rougher fibers which can affect your hair’s cuticle, leading to frizz, disrupted curls, and even breakage.

7. The weather

The time of year and weather make a huge difference in those with wavy-curly patterns. During winter when the air is colder and very dry, curls often droop and do not look as bouncy and defined as they do in warmer months with higher humidity. In dryer months, using a steamer can help add fullness and bounce to wavy hair.

8. Thinning or texturizing your hair

If your stylist insists on thinning or texturizing your wavy hair, then your stylist probably intends for you to blow it out straight. If you want to wear your hair in its naturally wavy state (and you should because it probably looks better that way) then thinning your hair is a bad idea. Thinning and texturizing wavy hair breaks up the waves and causes frizz.

9. Improper blowdrying technique

Even if you are using a diffuser to dry your wavy hair, you should always set the blow dryer to low heat and low air speed settings. There are actually 4 ways to blowdry your naturally curly hair. High heat will dry out your hair and cause frizz. High airspeed will disrupt the waves and break them up also causing frizz.

Coconut Oil Is Good For Naturally Curly Hair

Coconut oil is an all-natural wonder ingredient that is great for curly hair. Unlike most oils, coconut oil penetrates deep into the hair shaft, rather than sitting on the surface. When applied to curly hair, coconut oil helps heal protein loss, adds moisture and makes the hair stronger over time. Using coconut oil on your hair regularly can also help increase the shine, softness, and manageability while simultaneously decreasing frizz. Here’s how to add coconut oil to your routine.

Overnight Coconut Pre-Poo

For curly, damaged, or color-treated hair, it’s best to shampoo as little as possible (once or twice a week if you can) because traditional shampoo will strip your hair of its natural oils. When you do shampoo, always use a sulfate-free shampoo. Sulfate free shampoos are less damaging to your hair and won’t strip out your natural oils. Before you do shampoo, I recommend this overnight coconut oil treatment, also known as a “pre-poo.”

Directions:

  1. Warm coconut oil with fingers – Coconut oil is solid at room temperatures, but liquefies immediately with heat, so scoop a small amount out of your jar and it will melt instantly between your fingers, making it easy to apply.
  2. Massage into scalp – If you suffer from a dry, itchy or flaky scalp, start by using the pads of your fingers to apply the oil to your whole scalp, massaging gently so the scalp can really absorb the coconut oil.
  3. Apply to hair in sections – If you have fine hair, then avoid the roots, but for thick or coily hair, apply the oil evenly to the length of the strand.
  4. Wrap your hair in an old t-shirt – It can get messy if you go to bed with your hair uncovered, so wrap a towel or an old t-shirt around your hair before you go to sleep.
  5. Add heat – To intensify the treatment and get even better results, you can apply heat with a warm towel or your blow dryer.
  6. Shampoo, condition and style – The next morning, shampoo, condition, and style your hair as usual. One shampoo is often enough to remove the oil for most curly hair, but if you feel you need it, you can shampoo a second time.

Natural Anti-Frizz Serum

Coconut oil also makes a healthy, all-natural hair sealer for extra shine and frizz prevention. If you’re trying to grow longer, thicker hair, coconut oil aids in breakage prevention and retaining moisture.

Directions:

Apply a nickel-sized amount – Apply a small amount of coconut oil as the very last step in your styling routine, after any leave-in conditioners or gels you might use. Again if you have fine hair, avoid the roots and focus on the ends.
